Question:

Mac or Windows? (Freelance Graphic Designer)?

I would like to start a freelance as a Graphic Designer. I have been working for companies as a Graphic Designer for several years; so I know that most people/companies use Macintosh for designing. But I now have only PC at home with some old version of Adobe software.

Should I invest money to buy Mac + expensive software? Or do you think it is OK to use PC and buy upgrade software? I am worried about the conversion between PC vs Mac if I get projects from companies. Please give me any opinions. Thank you.

  1. I am also a web designer.

I use Windows XP fully as I am not a Mac fan personally.

I have never been turned down a job due to the fact I use Windows XP, and as a freelance it should only matter that the job is done well, not the operating system it is done on.

As for the virus issue, If it really is that big of an issue go with Linux.

Macs are not immune to viruses, it is just very rare to get one.

But a designer should not run into virus problems very often anyways.

  2. If you are going to be working as a freelance Designer than most companies will prefer that you work in Macintosh. Mac is the best computer when it comes to any sort of designing or film editing! Mac is something you will want to invest in! There is a plus side too, Macs can't get viruses!!!!!

  3. I have a Mac but switched to PC about 5 years ago. Most standard design programs are made for either platform. There's is no difference between a PSD for Mac vs. PC. Mac is much more expensive. You are already familiar with Mac, so I don't see a problem.
