Macau Open GP Gold: Lee Hyun Il overpowers Taufik Hidayat in the Men’s Singles quarter-final
Korea’s experienced player, Lee Hyun Il, has proved his mettle as he has defeated the favourite shuttler Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the Men’s Singles quarter-final of the 2011 Macau Open GP Gold, in Macau, on Friday, December 2.
The World Number 15 Lee Hyun played impressive badminton against Taufik, who is currently ranked at number 9 in the Men’s Singles world standings. The Korean played with confidence and emerged as victorious in the thrilling three-set fight against the Indonesian
and took the match in 66 minutes.
The Indonesian showed his class in the opening game of the match and won it without facing any resistance from the Korean. However, Lee Hyun made his way back as he clinched the second game with a comfortable score and also continued his impressive performance
in the deciding game and took it with a reasonable score on the board.
In the opening set of the match, the impressive Indonesian dominated the game with an incredible control and spared no room for the Korean to warn points. Taufik started the game in an attacking way and buried the bird by executing his famous jumping smashes
on the side lines of his rival’s court.
The Korean failed to put up strong show as he played numerous negative strokes which helped the Indonesian to set up lead in the first game. Lee Hyun lost the first set without any fight by a margin of 12-21.
In the second game of the match, the Indonesian failed to continue his domination in the game as Lee Hyun was quicker this time. The Korean missed no chance to win points and remained dominant throughout the second game and won it with a 21-15 score on the
board.
In the decider, the Indonesian tried hard to find his momentum back and remained close until the concluding phase of the game. However, the Korean remained focused in the game at this crucial stage and won it with a 21-17 score on the board. The 66-minute
match ended p in the favour of the Korean with a 12-21, 21-15 and 21-17 margin on the score board.
In the semi-final match, Lee Hyun will take on Malaysia’s Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, who defeated Japan’s Kenichi Tago in the other quarter-final showdown.
