Macau Open GP Gold: Simon Santoso beats Wong Wing Ki to enter into Men’s Singles quarter-final
Indonesia’s elite shuttler, Simon Santoso continues his impressive form as he has secured a quarter-final berth after beating Wong Wing Ki in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 in the 2011 Macau Open GP Gold, on Thursday, December 1, in Macau.
Santoso, who has occupied the number eight position in the Men’s Singles world rankings, worked really hard to beat the spirited Hong Kong shuttler and emerged as the winner in three games. He consumed 69 minutes to get rid of the stubborn Wing Ki and advanced
into the quarter-final.
The opening game was close as both men played aggressive badminton. However, Santoso remained successful in taking the ending points and won the game with a close margin. In the second set, the match remained close as both shuttlers progressed in the game
without taking a considerable lead.
It was the Hong Kong shuttler who managed to score the ending points and levelled the match. In the final set, Santoso showed no mercy to his opponent and won the set with a completely one-sided margin.
The opening set of this Men’s Singles battle was thrilling when both players pulled the attention of huge crowd by playing an attacking badminton. They remained close by playing with precision throughout the set. However, Santoso employed some superb strokes
by anticipating the bird quite early. He remained successful in winning the first set with a margin of 21-19.
In the following set, the fight remained intense as both sides put up fabulous show of top class game. They employed all skills to get a strong position in the second set but none of both shuttlers could manage it. The Indonesian committed a couple of unforced
mistakes in the ending phase and lost the set with a close margin of 22-24.
Santoso stunned the Hong Kong shuttler in the final set of the match as he was everywhere in the court. The impressive speed and accuracy of the Indonesian helped him to bag the final set with a superb margin of 21-12. This mouth-watering battle ended up
in 69 minutes with a 21-19, 22-24 and 21-12 score on the board.
