Hi, I'm writing an essay due tommorrow for Macbeth!! I'm having trouble with the meaning of some normal banter between Macbeth and his wife:

Macbeth: "The secret'st...(blah blah blah)...What is the night?"

Lady Macbeth: "Almost at odds with morning, which is which."

How does this quote relate to "what's foul is fair and fair is foul"?? Is Lady MB implying the morning is the same as night?! help VERY MUCH appreciated whole-heartedly and with the DEEPEST of thanks and love!! =)

  1. All I could say is sparknotes...I'm not sure of the full quotes or what scene Macbeth is talking to her in. Has he killed the king yet...Anyway, my best guess about the "what's foul is fair and fair is foul" is that it's refering back to the witches in the beginning, some verbal irony in what she said or something.

Macbeth asks what time it is, Lady Macbeth says it is almost morning, but you can't tell the difference.

In the same way, the Macbeths can't tell the difference between fair and foul.

  3. foul is fair and fair is foul is stated by the witches and basically is saying that what is good to a normal person is evil to them and vice versa.

Lady Macbeth seems to be saying that things are so twisted and evil that she can't tell night from day.
