  1. do you ever use  FileVault to clean up unused space on the hard drive?

I use it a couple of times a week.

  2. It appears you are missing roughly 9GB.  (120GB - 62.6GB = 57.4GB.  57.4GB - 48.8GB = 8.6GB)

So where is the missing 9GB?!?

It never existed in the first place!  Hard drive manufacturers and computer manufacturers measure drive space based on "marketing" math that uses increments of 1000 instead of the actual 1024 increments that all operating systems recognize.

At 80GB the difference amounts to about 5.6GB, roughly a 7% difference.  So at 120GB the difference would be 8.4GB.  Voila!

  3. The operating system and program files perhaps?
