Macbook/dvd question?

i was wondering if there was a way to put dvds onto your macbook, I'm not great with computers so please be very specific

example-i place a dvd in the drive and then what do i do to download the file to my computer?

Well, if it's a copyrighted DVD, you would just put it into the drive, and 'rip' the contents in order to save it onto your computer, if it isn't then your example way was correct.
