Maccabi Electra, Emporio Armani and Partisan MT:S win – Euroleague Group C 4th week Review: Part 2
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 81 - Belgacom Spirou 76
Antonis Fotsis led EA7 Emporio Armani Milan with 19 points on 4 for 8 shooting from the three-point range while Danilo Gallinari racked up 17 points, shooting 6 for 9 from free throw line. Ioannis Bourousis had 11 points and Drew Nicholas ended with 10 points in Emporio’ victory that snapped their two-game losing streak of the Turkish Euroleague regular season.
Belgacom Spirou’s Demond Mallet topped all scorers with 21 points and four rebounds. Mallet was 4 for 6 from two-point range, 2 for 3 from downtown and 7 for 8 from free throw line. Caleb Green had 12 points and eight rebounds while Christophe Beghin came off the bench with 11 points and two blocks in Spirou’s second straight loss.
Belgacom opened the first quarter on a 4-0 run to take initial lead but EA7 Emporio fought back and took a 12-11 lead. By the time, the frame ended, they were leading by 14-12.
The second quarter saw back-and-forth action with neither team able to create a lead greater than three points until the closing minutes, when Spirou posted five consecutive points for a 34-30 lead at halftime.
Armani made a marginal comeback in the third quarter and tied the game at 44 on Fotsis’ open jumper on the baseline. Belgacom however upped the ante again and raced to a 58-53 lead going into the final stanza.
Armani really had a go in the last 10 minutes. They kept on charging throughout the fame and when Nicholas buried a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter, the scores were levelled at 74 with about 1:30 to go till the final buzzer. The Azzuri surge didn’t end there and they reeled off a 7-2 run down the stretch to seal a comeback victory.
Partizan M: TS 80 - Real Madrid 79
Partizan M: TS registered their second consecutive victory with an 80-79 win over Real Madrid at Pionir Arena. It was also only the second ever win for Partizan against Madrid.
Nikola Pekovic led M: TS with 20 points and three rebounds while Milan Macvan recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Acie Law tallied 14 points and dished out five assists and Dusan Kecman had 10 points on 5 for 6 shooting from free throw line.
Jaycee Carroll led Madrid with 21 points, including 16 of them in the second quarter, while Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernandez totalled 13 points each for Madrid, who are 2-2 in the group. Rudy punctuated all of his points in the second half of the game.
Partizan got off to a breath-taking start and held a 10-0 lead early in the first quarter. Madrid fought hard to recover but Partizan still managed to take a 22-16 lead into the second.
In the second quarter, the Spaniards found their grove and converted the opening period deficit into a 35-34 lead. However, Partizan closed the quarter on a 10-5 run for a 45-40 lead at the break.
The Spanish giants had woken up by now and after the break, they crushed Partizan 21-12 to convert their five-point halftime deficit into a 61-57 lead after three.
Partisan handled the situation well in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 78-78 with 41 seconds to go. Rudy then made foul on Law, who scored 2 free throws to put Partizan ahead by two. Llull had an opportunity to level the scores but he missed one of his two free throws and then missed a potential game-winning three-pointer right at the buzzer.
