Maccabi Electra beat Belgacom Spirou 69-59: Turkish Euroleague Recap
On November 17, Maccabi Electra took yet another step towards the top 16 stage by downing Belgacom Spirou 69-59 at the Nokia Arena. The win propelled the Israeli club to a 4-1 record while Belgacom dropped to 1-4 in the group.
Lior Eliyahu led the way for the Maccabi with 15 points on a 6 for 10 shooting from two-point range. He also grabbed three rebounds while David Blu ended the night with 12 points, scoring all his points from the three-point range.
Demond Mallet recorded a game-high 18 points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists. The Belgacom star recorded 6 for 12 from the two-point range and 2 for 7 from downtown. Chris Hill added 15 points on a 3 for 8 shooting
from downtown and grabbed seven rebounds while Justin Hamilton finished with 10 rebounds and six points in the loss.
Maccabi’s centre Shawn James started the game with a three point play. Electra were dominant up front. They maintained their hold on the rivals and held an 11–6 lead within the first five minutes of the opening quarter. Mallet
knocked a trey from downtown to cut the lead to two, 11-9, but Electra responded with 10 consecutive points for a 22-9 lead with one minute to go in the first quarter, which was capped by a two pointer from Chris Hill to make it 22-11.
After being pounded in the first 10 minutes, the Belgians made a strong recovery early in the second quarter. They scored the first nine points of the quarter and cut the margin to just two, 22-20. Maccabi responded by punctuating
the next four but Spirou were on a roll and deep into the first half, they levelled the scores at 33.
Keith Langford nipped the surge and scored a basket to put Electra ahead by two again but Mallet responded for Spirou and tied game at 35, heading into the second half.
Electra, shaken by a strong fight back by Spirou, started to gain control in the third quarter and slowly pushed their lead to 50-45. However, late in the period, they were dumbfounded again as Spirou reeled off a 9-0 run and raced
onto a 54-50 lead after three. Electra responded swiftly after the break and opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 spurt. They then ensured a tight defence and hung on to their lead throughout.
