Macedonia upset Turkey in preliminary round, Group A: Day one – European Water Polo Championships
Republic of Macedonia upset Turkey in Men’s first water polo match of Group A on the initial day of 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Monday, January 16 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Macedonian squad enjoyed a comfortable win over their opponents by a margin of twelve goals. The score remained 16-4 after the four-quarter game.
The Macedonian players overwhelmed all efforts of Turkish team and remained dominant throughout the 32 minute game. They notched up three goals in first quarter while Turkey managed to advance on the scorecard by just one score.
Their dominance continued in the second quarter, where Turkish team seemed helpless and they remained at nil while Macedonia accomplished two more goals, making the score 5-1 after halftime.
The second half saw gruelling efforts of Macedonia, who supplemented six goals in the third round while turkey once again failed to score a single goal. With their unmatchable efforts, the Macedonian team achieved five goals in final round to overwhelm Turkey’s
three goals effort and the match ended with a clear win on Macedonia’s side
In the next match, Greece defeated Netherlands with a tight leash of 14-12. They scored four goals in the first quarter and five goals in the second quarter while the Netherlanders remained consistent on their part and scored three goals each. The score
went up to 9-6 after the first half.
The third quarter saw Netherlands going ahead 2-3 but they failed to bring any harm to Greece, as they still had a lead of two points. In the fourth-quarter, both teams scored three goals each and the Greek players celebrated their first win of the tournament.
With their remarkable win in the first match, Macedonia and Greece have turned out as strong teams of Group A. Both teams are now scheduled to compete against each other in their next water polo match on Tuesday, January 17. The crowd cannot wait to see
which team grabs victory in their second tourney of the championship.
In addition, the championship is a 14-day event and will conclude on January 29, after the completion of all scheduled matches.
