Question:

Machine building at home?

Ok I want to build a machine at home completely from scratch. I've already made the design and I think everything should work correctly. However I have two big problems, power and building. The first thing I need to do is build some kind of motor. The motor needs to be as strong as I can get it. The second problem is the actual construction. I need to get parts. I need things like circles, and pipes, maybe wheels, etc.

Does anyone know where I could get parts, and how I could build a motor? I don't want to spend to much on it, but I'm willing to if it's needed. Please help.

  1. Don't even try to build a motor. I takes a major job by a machine shop plus lots of design work.

Decide on voltage and power and look on ebay for a second hand motor.

    For example, I saw a 1/2 HP 120 VAC motor for $25

Or get the motor out of an old junked washing machine.

  2. Well, that's pretty easy. First draw the machine outlines in a layout, Put down the dimensions, then count and name the parts that will be assembled to make your construction.

Now, you could buy these parts by name from the "standard parts" retailers/shops, ask for the part by name and dimesion example : two ball bearings 25 mm, or a steel plate 20 *20 .. etc.

The power ... you could buy a "ready to use" electric motor, just decide the torque/shaft diameter. You have the choice to buy a brand new motor or you could buy a used motor at a good state !
