  1. A machinist mate could work in dry dock, on shore bases. They make parts for the ships. It is a sea going rate, but there are shore jobs.

  2. They do shore duty and Sea duty.

Best way to stay off ship

    Air Force

Also: Machinist work on ships sewer system, can be soooo gross, and the job is usually greasy and dirty.

I was a Machinery Repairman and we worked closely with Mates

  3. The name "machinist mate" is just that, you're a machinist and that work can be done on shore as well as sea.  It's a seagoing rate like was said and during a 20 year career, 60%+ of your time will be out to sea but they have a sea/shore rotation just like every other seagoing rate.  4 - 6 years of sea duty and then 4 years of shore duty  and then back to sea duty.

BTW, MMs don't do plumbing unless the Navy got rid of HT's (Hull Technicians) also known as "t**d chasers".
