Mackenzie Hughes leads Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship after three rounds
Ontario’s Mackenzie Hughes is leading the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at the Camelot Golf and Country Club, after a seven-under par 65 third-round score gave him a one shot lead over his compatriot Chris Hemmerich.
Hughes got off to a confident start with a birdie on the first hole and never stopped creating birdie chances afterwards.
He recorded a total of seven birdies and broke the course record by one stroke for a 12-under par score while heading into the final round.
According to him, he did not play as good as he did during the second round. However, luck was not with him on Wednesday and he scored better on Thursday.
Many times he found himself in difficult positions. Yet, he managed to tackle them successfully and posted a remarkable score on the leaderboard.
“Today was a much different day than yesterday [Wednesday],” Hughes said. “I actually played better yesterday, but today things just went a little bit better. I got up and down a couple of more times when I missed the greens, and had that bonus there on
the last hole [No. 18] chipping in when I was just trying to make par. It was a nice way to finish”.
Last year, Hughes outshined his opponents in the same tournament held at the Niakwa Country Club to take the title home.
This year, he aims to repeat the same and defend the title successfully to retain the accolade. Currently, he appears to be moving on the right track that can lead him to his goal in the end.
“It’s nice to know that you’ve done it and that you can do it, so I kind of was drawing on that today,” said Hughes. “I plan to do the same thing tomorrow that I was doing today”.
Meanwhile, Hemmerich also managed to sign seven birdies in his round. However, two bogeys forced him to stay away from the lead in the end.
Corey Conners took the third spot on his own, after a three-under par 69 for a nine-under par overall score.
Taylor Pendrith and Brian Churchill-Smith were listed fourth and fifth with eight-under and seven-under par score, respectively.
