American lad, Mackenzie McDonald, made an epic comeback to dump the Czech youngster, Robin Stanek, in a three set thriller at the Australian Open 2012 on Thursday. He penned down a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the 17-year-old Czech to advance into the semi-finals
of the Boy’s Singles event at this first Grand Slam of the season.
The American youngster lost the opening ten games before re-focusing his strategy to overpower Stanek in their first meeting. He required an hour and 28 minutes to run over the Czech and secure a place in the semi-finals at the Melbourne Park.
Stanek rushed into the opening set and after unveiling his true colours, he wiped out the first six games successively. He brushed off all three breakpoints he encountered and capitalised on three out of four break chances to earn the spotlight in 23 minutes.
The Czech carried his winning ways in the following set and went on a four games killing spree. However, he stepped off steam afterwards and lost the track.
16-year-old on the other hand bounced back with a fitting reply. He not only snatched his break back in the fifth game but reeled off the last six games in a row, ultimately pocketing the equaliser with a 6-4 score line. McDonald lost his serve twice but
broke the Czech’s serve three times to triumph in almost half an hour.
After Stanek held his serve in the opening game of the final set, the American unleashed his skills again and swiped in the next three games in a row. He lost the fifth game but bagged the last three games with a break of serve, subsequently sealing the
decider by winning six games to two.
Next up for the American teenager is the Canadian competitor, Filip Peliwo, who trashed the British youngster, Joshua Ward-Hibbert, in straight sets to set-up this meeting.
Top seeded local star, Luke Saville, will accompany McDonald in the final four. He edged past the seventh seed, Kyle Edmund, in straight sets to reach this spot. Saville broke his opponent’s serve six times and dusted away six out of 12 breakpoints he came
across to register a 7-5, 7-5 victory.
