  1. The most superficial (outer) part is called the cortex.  Deep into the cortex is the second part called the medulla that contains, among other things, renal pyramids formed almost completely of microscopic urine-collecting tubules and capillaries.  The third main part is the renal pelvis where urine is collected before leaving the kidney via the uterer to go to the bladder.


  2. The cortex (outer layer), medulla (inner layer) and renal pelvis.
