Made a mistake... help??

I am very prone to yeast infections and have had a bacterial infection once before. The other day I made a TERRIBLE decision to use Vaseline as a lubricant during s*x. I now fear that I have one or the other at the moment and am not sure how to help my situation. I have decided to take some Flagyl (in case of a bacterial infection) for a few days and the day after I stop taking this, I intend to take Diflucan (in case of a yeast infection).

In your opinion or from past experiences, does this sound like the proper way to handle it?

Thanks so much in advance!

Note: Going to the doctors is not an option. I have no health insurance for the time being.

  1. ok firstly look at your symptoms (if any) yeast infections (thrush) appear like clotted cheese and can be itchy for this you need diflucan for bacterial ie..BV you need flagyl use the one that is more appropriate and hopefully you wont need the other...fingers crossed for you...good luck

  2. Get to know some basical knowledge of your confused field before taking any suggestion is a great idea. Here is great place to start off.http://health-insurance.tips4free.info/h...

  3. First of all what are your symptoms?  If you can identify which one you have can treat it faster and more effectively.

Secondly if going to the doctor is not an option have you thought about a clinic?  They tend to be much cheaper and while they can be inconvenient (you often have to wait as they are normally walk-ins) it is much better then trying to treat yourself for the wrong infection for days!

The problem with taking any medications is that you most likely have left over meds... in other words you did not finish your treatment the last time you had an infection (which can lead to resistant organisms and make it more difficult to get rid of the infection and make you more prone to getting infections because you never fully rid your body of the infection.)

If you are going to take any antibiotic you should always eat yogurt to help maintain a healthy balance because you are prone to yeast infections.  This will help prevent them in the future.

If you are not sure which infection you have I would treat the yeast infection first.  I would do this because

    1. Antibiotics can cause yeast infections

    2. Yeast infection treatment is over the counter so you can buy a treatment and use it all.

If you are prone to yeast infections you should look at some of the other risk factors such as using perfumed famine products, douches, and other cleaner, you should make sure that your undies are made of breathable fabric like cotton and make sure that you stay dry (like changing out of a wet bathing suit as soon as you are done with swimming.)

    Good luck...hope this helped!

  4. No...taking antibiotics in the absence of confirmed bacterial infection can lead to drug resistant bacterias, also, if you did not go to Dr and these are some leftover medications, their potency is suspect also. Make an appointment with planned parenthood or your local health dept or some other clinic that offers treatment based on income. This is not the proper way to deal with this.

  5. Stop. Go to the doctor. Taking anti-biotics when you don't need them,or not the full amount needed, causes your body to produce "super" bacteria. So next time you need to take something it won't work. There are womens clinics that charge next to nothing, and there are also many doctors who will offer discounts to patients without insurance-talk to their billing department. You can also work out a payment plan. You really shouldn't mess around when it comes to taking care of your body. The expense of paying the doctor will be well worth it.
