Madeira Islands Open – Portugal: Oliver Wilson finishes tied for fourth
Oliver Wilson finished tied for the fourth position at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal, as he shot a 69 in the final round.
The 31-year-old Englishman was on the top of the leaderboard till the second round. However, his mediocre performance on Saturday, took him beyond top-10 positions, at the Santo da Serra in Madeira, Portugal.
He started the tournament on Thursday, played a bogey free round and shot 6 amazing birdies. He was tying for the second position in the first round and made a solid start.
He improved his performance on Friday and played another bogey-free round. He made seven long-yard birdies and grabbed the leading position on the leaderboard.
“I played nicely,” Wilson said. “The fact I haven’t had a bogey for two rounds shows I’m playing solidly and sensibly. I actually feel like I left a few out there today. I missed three putts from inside six feet. But I made a couple of really good par saves
– not from bad shots, just because the course is tricky”.
After reaching the top, he planned to maintain the leading position and desired to score well in the rest two rounds.
“There’s a long way to go and the scoring will carry on being low, but I’ll keep pushing on trying to make birdies. There will inevitably be some mistakes at the weekend but it’s just a question of trying to limit them. You’ve got to be patient,” Wilson
said.
However, he failed to be impressive on Saturday as he shot a 72. He carded three bogeys and three birdies in the third round. He lost his domination and dropped to a lower position on the leaderboard by many positions.
He strived to impress the spectators in the final round and scored a 3-under 69. He made 5 birdies and two bogeys in total. He final score was a 16-under 272 and he finished six strokes behind the leader Ricardo Santos.
Santos recorded the best score of his life. He shot 9 massive birdies in the final round and was bogey-free till the end of the day.
Now, Wilson has to learn that how to remain consistent while scoring in  four-day tournaments. He also has to improve his putting, so that he can make the domination throughout the tournament.
