Madeline Smart wins Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day four – YMCA National Championship
Madeline Smart of Wilton-CT won gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on day four of the 2012 YMCA National Long Course Championship at Georgia Institute of Technology Aquatics Center on Thursday, July 26.
Smart faced strong competition from Katrina Konopka of Middle Tyger-SC throughout the two-lap event but with her strong determination, she proved her eligibility for the crown.
She continued her smothering efforts in the final lap of the race and hit the finishing blockade for gold medal with a classic time of 57.38 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Konopka, who remained 0.16 seconds apart and secured silver medal of the discipline by producing a nice time of 57.54 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Jenna Immormino of Somerset Hills-NJ, who stayed 0.15 seconds apart and ended her sprint in third best place by touching the wall with the timing of 57.69 seconds.
Similarly, fourth position of the discipline was secured by Elizabeth McDonald of Cheshire-CT, who suffered a deficit of only 0.12 seconds from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 57.81 seconds.
McDonald was followed by Katy Luchansky of Wilton-CT, who remained 0.08 seconds behind and hit the finishing wall with the timing of 57.89 seconds for fifth position.
The 18-year-old Luchansky was chased by Anna Wujciak of Gr. Flint-MI, who remained just one stroke behind and made her way to the finishing blockade for sixth position of the event by posting a time of 58.08 seconds.
Subsequently, Wujciak was trailed by Ingrid Shu of Lake Land Hills-NJ, who was 0.11 seconds slower from upsetting her former finisher and transpired on the finishing blockade with the timing of 58.19 seconds.
Following that, the audience witnessed gruelling efforts of Alexandra Marshall of Northwest-NC, who stayed 0.23 seconds behind Shu over the finishing end and completed her race in eighth place by producing a time of 58.42 seconds.
In addition, Smart was delighted with her medal claiming effort in the event and articulated that she would continue her exhausting efforts in order to impress her fans at the forthcoming swimming tournaments.
