Madison Brengle beats Melinda Czink in the opening round – Citi Open 2011
It was the tallest of tall orders for 21-year-old Madison Brengle to eliminate the 5ft 10in Melinda Czink today, and after an hour of an intriguing first set the pair was tied up at six games apiece, and by the time the match finished,
with a 7-6(5), 7-5 victory and a place in the second round for the American, the future of American’s place in the event looked a lot rosier than it had a couple of hours ago.
Although the 21-year-old had to face a lot of resistance from her Hungarian opponent, she did reveal that she had the weapons to go a good deal further in her up-coming matches. In particular, it was a deep, accurate serve, and
a powerful backhand, that forced Czink to lose the match in straight sets, even though she played a lot better performance-wise.
The first set of the match went all the way to a tie-breaker after both the women had traded early breaks of serves, with Brengle stepping up the gears when it mattered the most to post a 7-6(5) triumph in the opener, winning 54
percent of points on service, 52 percent of points on return and a total of 49 of 92 during the match. In contrast, the Hungarian woman lost the opener with a difference of six points in total, allowing the American to take the early advantage.
As the second set started, the American raised her game up a notch and appeared to be on course to take the second set with a 6-4 scoreline, however, nothing happened like that. Although the Hungarian put up a fight to push the
set into a tiebreaer, Brengle rallied back, converting her three break points to pull off the match in straight sets.
Brengle had to score 54 percent behind her service, 50 percent on return and a total of 42 of 81 points in an attempt to offer any valiant resistance to someone who was ranked 62 places above her in the WTA rankings list.
She now moves on into the second round where she will meet the third-seeded Tamira Paszek of Austria.
