Madison Brengle beats Whitney Jones; enters the final round of qualifier – Citi Open 2011
World number 222, Madison Brengle of America has safely moved through to the second round of Citi Open 2011 after defeating compatriot Whitney Jones 6-2, 6-1.
Both women had never played before, but now after playing their first match at the Tennis Center at College Park, Brengle successfully made it to go one up in their head-to-head score.
Brengle and Whitney may both be compatriots, but as long as the match score was concerned, it was only thing they were sharing in common, as the 21-year-old Brengle exhibited a master class in her second round match against the
compatriot.
Playing in front of a loud home crowd, the 21-year-old Brengle hardly made any mistake from the start, churning out points after points and giving her opponent a good run for her money to clinch the match in just 44 minutes of
play.
As the contest took a start, Brengle looked very casual, almost as if she was playing in some kind of a practice session. She moved easily, quickly and gracefully around the court with her firepower, while Jones could not absorb
the pace of her compatriot, finding herself down at a 0-1 lead.
Applying pressure from the opening game, Brengle broke to go 1-0 ahead, quickly racing through next two games to take a 3-1 lead. Playing with a lot of grace, Brengle deposited a forehand smash which Jones could only stare at and
immediately started to lose her confidence.
The first set was Brengle’s 6-3 in just few minutes, and the younger American did not waste any time in amassing a breadstick lead in the second set.
Brengle wrapped up her second round match with 68 percent of points on her service, 75 percent of points on return and 51 of 72 points in total. In contrast, Jones wrapped up the match with 25 percent of points on service, a meagre
33 percent on return and a total of 21 of 72 during the match that did not last longer than 44 minutes of play.
Brengle now marches on into the third round of the tournament where she will be facing fifth-seeded Beatrice Capra of America.
Also, Kim Grajdek of Germany moved into the third round of the tournament, after the second seeded Lauren Albanese called it quits due to an injury.
Although Albanese was playing at full stretch to cope with the difficult situation, she remained unable to take it any further and handed over the match while trailing 7-6(5), 1-0.
Grajdek now moves on into the third round of the tournament, where she will face sixth-seeded Ryoko Fuda of Japan.
