Madison Bumgarner dominates as San Francisco Giants defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 - Part 2
In the final match of the two game set between the reigning World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants were victorious as they defeated the Dodgers 3-1 at Dodger stadium.
Madison Bumgarner worked hard throughout the entire duration of the game to achieve his first victory since the 2011 season began. The victory came a little too late given that this is his ninth start, but a victory is a victory nonetheless and it helped
the Giants triumph over their long term rivals, the Dodgers.
Credit should be given to Nate Schierholtz who made quite an astounding catch which played a vital part in Bumgarner’s victory. Bumgarner was more than relieved to finally get a win as he commented, “It feels like a playoff win, it’s been so long, I’m just
glad to finally get that first win out of the way. But it taught me a lot and what I need to focus on.”
Bumgarner sacrificed one run and six hits in the game. The young 21-year-old, who has an ERA of 1.32 in the duration of his last five outings struck-out three and let two walk. Bumgarner is now one of the three pitchers in Major League Baseball history who
have started in a World Series but then in the following season have gone without a win in the first eight starts. Anthony Reyes of the 2007 St. Louis Cardinals and Hall of Fame elective Bert Blyleven from the 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates are the other two.
The first run of the game was put on the scoreboard in the second inning by Mike Fontenot of the Giants as he doubled to left and Buster Posey scored. The next run came in the very next inning as Freddy Sanchez belted a sacrifice fly to centre-field after
which Bumgarner scored. After going scoreless for three innings, the last run from the Giants came in the sixth inning as Sanchez singled to centre-field and Miguel Tejada scored.
The only time the Dodger men were allowed to put a run on the scoreboard came in the ninth inning as Jerry Sands doubled to deep centre-field off which Rod Barajas scored.
After suffering their loss at home, the Dodgers would be travelling to Chicago next for a three game set which would inevitably refresh memories of the 1959 Fall Classic in which the Dodgers triumphed over the Chicago White Sox.
It will be interesting to see how the Giants carry their winning momentum, as the Dodgers put in a decent performance in this game only to lose by two runs at their home stadium.
