Madison Bumgarner strikes as San Francisco Giants defeat Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner put in a brilliant pitching performance to take his club into a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the rubber match of the tree-game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Sunday, July 24.
The 21-year-old lefty entered the field for his 21st start and it looked like he will not be able to snatch his sixth straight win, as he has allowed an early run to the Brewers’ Ryan Braun. However, he made a dazzling rebound and held the opposing
batters helpless until the end of his seven innings.
He struck-out eight batters to improve his record to 6-9 with 3.56 ERA. He tossed 65 strikes of 93 pitches. He and his team will be a guest of President Barack Obama in the White House on Monday before entering the series against the Major League leaders
Philadelphia Phillies.
"It is going to be an honour," Bochy said. "When we're there, we'll think about why we're there. We get the chance to meet the President. It is going to be a fun trip. After we see the President we'll jump on a train, like the old days, and go on to Philly."
Bumgarner handed the ball to his reliever Sergio Romo, who tossed just four pitches to hold his 17th game with a 1.85 ERA. Closer Brian Wilson also crushed the struggling Brewers and got his 31st save of the season.
The second baseman Jeff Keppinger scored an RBI single to tie the game at 2-all in the bottom of the third inning. Mike Fontenot hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field, allowing Nate Schierholtz to score a game leading run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Besides these two runs, the Brewers’ starter Yovani Gallardo kept the Giants under pressure but he could not protect him from their seventh loss. He tossed 81 strikes of 121 pitches and struck-out five batters over seven innings. Closer Takashi Saito gave
away one hit and two walks over one inning.
