Madison Keys locks Olga Govortsova progress in the first qualifying round - Sony Ericsson Open 2012
American teen, Madison Keys, unlocked the door of the second qualifying round of the Sony Ericsson Open by upsetting the Belarusian eighth seed, Olga Govortsova, in the first match in Miami. She dug deep to register a first head-to-head
triumph against the 23-years-old Belarusian in their maiden face-off. Final scores were 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in favour of the American.
Keys took off the match proceedings with a comprehensive serve hold and went on to take the lead of 3-1 courtesy to a classic breakthrough in the fourth game. Her serve was broken back in the following game but she did well to
reinstate the lead with another thumping breakthrough that was kept alive till the end.
The eighth seed contestant was clearly stunned at the display of her opponent but she was definitely not going to go down that easy. Trailing one set down, Govortsova organized herself in the break and devised a different game
plan to handle the outbreak of the teen.
Local support was with the American teen. She started the second set in the same fashion but was suddenly bobbed down with a trade of breakthroughs from both ends. However, she was going nicely in the second set, the pressure was
exerting continuously on her serve games. She did well to keep the set alive and scores together at 5-5.
At a critical stage of the set, the Belarusian player used her guile and experience to devastate the local teen in the 12th game; broke serve for the second time and more importantly enforced the third set into the play
that enhanced her chances of marching on into the next round.
The momentum was definitely with the visitor but the teen broke serve first in the third set. Unluckily, her serve was broken in the following game that levelled the scores at 2-2. She still kept on fighting hard and won a deserving
breakthrough in the seventh game that turned the tables on her opponent.
Frustration was mounting on the Belarusian player and she made a lot of unforced errors that angered her a lot. The lead was kept intact till the end that booked a date for the local with the Aussie starlet, Anastasia Rodionova,
in the next round.
