Madrid Makes a Move on Maicon
After the much-ballyhooed 2010 FIFA World Cup, we’re picking up some massive news from the big clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, AC Milan, etc. And the latest reports state that Real Madrid has made a move on Brazilian full-back Maicon.
Despite Brazil’s disappointing exit in the World Cup, the big wigs have turned their attention to the Selecao’s brightest stars. And owing to his breathtaking runs down the flanks, bulwark-like work in the back, and capacity to score goals from odd angles, Maicon has won the interests of Real Madrid and Manchester City.
For new Madrid manager Mourinho, the player that is likely to solve his defensive frailties is none other than Maicon. They used to work together at Inter, and Mourinho would like Maicon to join him on Spanish soil.
Under Mourinho, Maicon became a pivotal member of the Nerazzurri’s Coppa Italia, Champions League and Serie A treble-winning campaign.
However, the talks have been everything but smooth, as Maicon’s wage wishes are bit high for Real Madrid’s taste. Even if a team like Madrid has deep pockets, they are unlikely to invest heavily in a 29-year old player.
The culprit here, apparently, is not Maicon but Inter, as the Italian outfit are said to be over-pricing the Brazilian full-back at €35 million. Madrid, on the other hand, is only willing to shell out €25 million for Maicon.
The good thing going for Madrid is Maicon’s personal wish to join Mourinho. The player, as a matter of fact, spoke with the manager to convince Madrid team officials to cough up the cash before the transfer window closes. As of press time, they only have 48 hours.
If not, Mourinho might have to look elsewhere.
Antonio Caliendo, the Brazilian’s agent, has confirmed the rumors and stated that the camps involved are still in talks. “The negotiation is in the hands of the two presidents, and I don't think it will be difficult for them to find an agreement," said Caliendo.
"At the moment, there are differences between the offer and the asking price, but I hope everything will be resolved as soon as possible and that it will work out for both parties. If Maicon does leave Inter, Madrid is definitely the first option," added the agent.
The agent also stated his displeasure with Inter and their handling of the player’s situation. Maicon wants a move, but Inter wants more cash.
Caliendo has revealed that should a standoff in the transfer talks happen, Maicon will stay at Inter.
At this point, Inter is in charge.
“Maicon has a contract with Inter and that is the reality... there is a high probability that he will remain at Inter,” stated Caliendo.
Rumors are circulating that bad blood is brewing between Real Madrid and Inter because of the Maicon situation. According to the Spanish press, Real officials are said to be fed up with the Italian club’s postulating and have given Inter president Massimo Moratti a 72-hour ultimatum to accept their offer.
As of now, Moratti has not made his next move. But it is said that the Inter president will make his decision by the end of the week.
If Mourinho does not get Maicon, the manager is said to be keen on Milan's Thiago Silva or Benfica's David Luiz. But Maicon remains his top priority.
Blancos director general Jorge Valdano has announced shortly after the signing of Argentine Di Maria that Madrid will make only one or two more signings before the start of La Liga.
With time running out, will it be Maicon for Madrid?
