  1. Free spirited, like the arts (especially architecture) and like Mediterranean weather? Barcelona.

Like history, big city life and a bit more subdued atmosphere? Madrid.

  2. Barcelona...it's more lively there and fun with lotsa things to do and keep you busy...beaches and cities and museums and paella & sangria....

Everything you need in a place...

  3. I'd have to say Barcelona but both cities are great!! See below:

Madrid is like any major capital city with awesome shopping, and things to do. El Palacio Real (or Royal Palace), the Prado Museum (El Greco, Velazquez, Peter Paul Rubens, Goya, etc), the Reina Sofia Museum (Art by Picasso and Dali), Plaza Mayor, are all must sees. If you want to see other cities, Segovia and Toledo are easily accessable. Segovia has the best preserved aquaducts in Spain, and the Alcazar palace is amazing!! Toledo is a city built by the Moors and is incredible also. Both cities could be done in a day and are only about 30 minutes from Madrid.

Barcelona is in Catalunya where they speak both Spanish and Catalan. Barcelona is very rich in culture and VERY unique. The Gaudi buildings are unlike anything else I have ever seen. Especially La Sagrada Familia, a church that looks like a sandcastle - google an image of it!! Also The Parque Guell is above the city but is also very unique. Finally La Casa Mila is another incredible building. The Gaudi architecture make walking around Barcelona incredible. Las Ramblas is a pedestrian street with street performers and is very entertaining. The beach, Picasso museum and Parc de la Ciutadella are also must sees. Like Madrid, Barcelona has many places to shop.

  4. I vote for Barcelona, is the most cosmopolitan city in Spain.

I love the artistic feeling of the city.

  5. Madrid!!! Although Barcelona is also beautiful. Barcelona has beautiful architecture and has the beach. But I found it from my personal experience to have more fun in Madrid. I also found it easier to get around.

  6. Madrid- have everything a lot of museums, castle, pubs, stores, parks, restaurants and variety.

  7. Absolutely:  Madrid!!  Much more Spanish.  I actually felt the change when we got off the train in Barcelona.  You´re no longer in Spain.  You´re in Cataluña.  It´s different.  Really nice, but different.  Still, Madrid, more my type.

Anyone who recognizes me, though, knows I favor the South, altogether.  Sevilla was my home when I lived there, and will always hold that special place in my heart.  It´s the most romantic, and typical (of what most of us expect) of the Spanish cities.
