Magdalena Rybarikova and Yung-Jan Chan move to the final qualifier- US Open 2012
Magdalena Rybarikova defeats Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-1
World number 66, Magdalena Rybarikova disposed the Serbian Aleksandra Krunic in the second qualifying round of the US Open held on the hard courts of New York in straight sets of 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday.
The 23-year-old held her initial serve in the match and got the scores to 1-0, the Serbian immediately hit back to even out the scores at 1-1. However, Krunic was unable to hold her serves and Rybarikova took advantage of
the situation to clinch the next three games, bringing the scores to 4-1. The 19-year-old crumbled under pressure of the thumping from her opponent eventually lost the set at 3-6.
In second set, both the contenders maintained their opening serves initially but the Serbian contender was unable to take the lead later on. With the momentum on her side, former world number 67 pocketed the remaining games
and jolting down 6-1 score.
Rybarikova smashed three aces against her rival and double faulted once. On the other hand, Krunic fired five aces and double faulted twice at the critical moments in the match.
Yung-Jan Chan battles past Sharon Fichman 4-6, 6-3, 6-3
23-year-old Taiwanese, Yung-Jan Chan, defeated the Canadian underdog Sharon Fichman in the qualifiers round on the hard courts in New York of the US Open. The Taiwanese participant won the match at 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, after a
fierce battle.
The Canadian was unable to hold her initial serve in the opening set. A series of break points was witnessed in the beginning of the set as both the players provided each other with a tough competition. As the game kicked
momentum, Fichman levelled the scores to 4-4. The right-hander Chinese was unable to handle her opponent’s pressure towards the end and lost the set at 4-6.
In the second set, the momentum shifted its direction and former world number 50, Chan, didn’t allow the Canadian professional to reconcile her scores. She grabbed the initial games of the set, establishing her 6-3 lead to
conclude the set.
In the final set between the contestants, Chan was unable to sustain her initial serve. Nonetheless, she stepped forward blowing her rival to claim the set 6-3 and wrapped up victory in assertive manner.
Unfortunately, Chan was unable to strike any ace and double faulted four times, whereas she had a good first serve percentage of 78. The Canadian participants struck one ace against her rival and never committed any double
fault. She had a reasonable first serve percentage of 73 in the match.
Chan will be contesting against the German Tatjana Malek in the final qualifying round.
