Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen not an option for the Detroit Tigers – MLB News
The Detroit Tigers’ general manager and president Dave Dombrowski did not rule out the possibility of not re-signing Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen as injuries continued to plague the duo coupled with the increasing age factor.
The two had previously played an integral part in winning the team the World Series title just when they had the worst ever performance of their franchise history in 2003 with 119 losses. But as they age, not to mention the injuries, there is less possibility
of them being favourite candidates to be part of the Detroit Tigers.
The announcement came on Tuesday when Dombrowski said, “I would say the odds are, most likely, they would not be back." There were already talks that the duo stood no chance owing to the reasons mentioned earlier.
Ordonez became part of Detroit Tigers in 2004 when he was signed in as a free agent. The seven-year contract gave him and the Detroit Tigers time to realise their potential respectively. Previously, Ordonez was part of the Chicago White Sox.
Despite the fact that he got a mid-season injury, the Tigers decided to retain him. The injury would then take him to Europe, but the Tigers stood watching by the time he returned. He made a great return, bringing the Tigers a title they needed desperately.
"He has done a tremendous amount for this franchise," Dombrowski said. "He, I think, started us [on the rise]. Right after Pudge, he was the next guy to come on board and sort of lead us as a free agent to come on board and help build us back."
With a .298 average that year, having hit 28 homers, he also hit a walk-off homer in 2006 Game 4 of the American League Championship Series to help the team make inroads into the World Series. That was the team’s first World Series to be played after two
decades, since 1984.
Guillen also had a .318 average with 97 RBIs and 20 homers in 2004. He had got his extension in 2007 with a 48-million-dollar deal.
