Magglio Ordonez rejoins the Detroit Tigers on one-year deal
If there’s one thing to expect in the coming season, it has to be the fierce competition in the American League East (AL-E) table. However that’s not the only tight contest going on, the AL Central (AL-C) region is also going strong.
The odds are stacked in three teams’ favour and when one looks at the changes in their rosters, there is a magnitude of uncertainty at the helm. The top clubs in the region include last season’s AL-C champions Minnesota Twins, the second ranked Chicago White
Sox and the Detroit Tigers. All three clubs have made sizeable additions to their squads in the off-season, and while most of the focus has been on restructuring the rosters, some top quality players have come through.
The White Sox mostly signed free agents, and brought in Adam Dunn on first base. The Twins have brought in Japanese superstar Tsuyoshi Nishioka on shortstop, and the Tigers have acquired the services of Victor Martinez. These three players add more value
to the clubs, and they will indicate the level of improvement in the teams during the off-season period.
While the new additions are being registered, the Tigers have quickly moved to secure the services of their veteran hitter Magglio Ordonez. The top quality hitter is approaching the age of 37, and while his previous season was plagued by an ankle injury,
he’s returned to the club on a one year deal worth $10 million. He will probably feature in right field or the designated hitter position.
Nevertheless the optimists claim his inclusion in the existing line-up will provide the squad with the potential to topple any side in the league. General Manager David Dombrowski is one lucky person at the club, and will be excited to see the deal closed.
"We are thrilled to have Magglio back with us," David Dombrowski said. "It completes the everyday line-up for our ball club and by adding Magglio back and to be in a position to have Victor (Martinez) join us, all of a sudden the middle of our line-up puts
us in a good position."
Ordonez also commented on his signing, and explained the situation from his perspective.
Ordonez said, "I like the organisation, my team-mates and the owner. I like everything around the Detroit Tigers. And I want to be comfortable. At this stage of my career, I don't want to bounce around cities and make new team-mates. I want to be in Detroit
with my team-mates and my team, and try to finish my career with the Tigers."
