Question:

Maggots in dog p**p - is this common?

Yesterday while cleaning the back yard, I scooped up a pile of p**p and was revolted to see maggots all over it and in it.

Is this normal? In all the years I have had dogs, I have never seen this.

The pile I scooped up looked more like an ant hill, than the remnants of a log, but I know it was a log at one time. It was maybe a few days old.

My dog is 5 months old and has all of his shots. When I adopted him, I took him in for a full eval. and the vet found him clear of all pests - including worms.

  1. Where do you think that goes if you don't clean it up?

the flies get to it and lay eggs, fly eggs turn into maggots, maggots to flies.......

  2. Yes this is normal, fly's are fast to lay eggs on pooh, maggots don't come from your puppy they come from fly's.so don't worry your puppy doesn't  have maggots inside her, that would only happen if she was dead.

  3. Maggots are common in p**p, but it takes a few days for them to show up.

I am almost embarrased to admit that i had NO IDEA that maggots were fly larvae! I learned something new today, thanks guys!

  4. it could have been vomit and have meat remnants in it and maggots probably went in it...or it was poo and it was worms

  5. COINCIDENT, I'M SURE!!!!!

Just yesterday I had the same incident. Today after returning  from the VET,I'm relieved to know that it was not because of the dog.

      Seems three days ago,my nephew took the dog out and he did not take the 'POOPER-SCOOPER'. So that stool was used by the common housefly to incubate her eggs.{DARN FEMALES}

SOOooooo..... Not to worry, just pay attention to the new stools.I did let the Vet go ahead and do the 'DEWORM' thing.

You know, he didn't even give me my' incubating t**d" back!!!

                                     "BRILLIANT"!!!

  6. Check it this week every time your dog goes out.  I know it's gross but just to make sure that the maggots are not coming out of the dog, I'd check it.   Peace of mind.  When my dog goes, I pick it up with toilet paper and flush it then I have no mess or garbage to clean up the end of the week...and no gagging when I take the garbage out.

  7. Few days old don't worry about it. If you saw it come out of him like that its worms.

  8. The maggots are from flies. They lay their eggs on the f***s and the eggs hatch into maggots within 24 hours. It's very common if you haven't picked up in a few days or miss a pile!! That's where flies come from! It doesn't mean the dog has worms,as maggots are not worms, but the larvae of flies.

  9. I don't believe maggots can come out of a dog alive. And if they were in the dog's stomach in egg form they most likely would've eaten out of a dog (yeah it's nasty - happened to my friend's dog. Needless to say, it died...).

I have that problem cause my dog has chronic diarrhea pretty much. She's pretty healthy, she's always had that problem and when I took her in for a check-up the vet didn't find anything wrong with her. p**p sits, heats up, smells, attracts flies, flies drool, lay eggs, maggots hatch (ewwwewewewew).

Just make sure you don't have opened canned food laying around or anything. Maggots/ESPECIALLY eggs in it = bad.

  10. The reason you had maggots in the poo is while it was sitting gin the yard...flies where landing on it and laying eggs...

It sat too long in the sun and the same with the dried doggie log..There is nothing wrong with the poo, except the weather, sun and rain has interacted with it...and you have cool stuff to pick up.

  11. yes its normal

  12. eat the maggots they're full of protein

  13. Flies lay their eggs on the dog p**p in your yard and those eggs become maggots.  It's normal.
