Magic Johnson thinks the Lakers are a better team next season, but still miss a shooter – NBA News
Although Magic Johnson is now part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, his team is and always will be the Los Angeles Lakers.
The hall of famer led the Lakers to multiple NBA championships, and helped cement the club as the most decorated and most popular basketball club in the world. Every now and then, Johnson gets asked about the Lakers. And being
a true Laker, he always has some piece of advice for his former team.
Johnson was at the Dodgers stadium on Tuesday night and was asked about the prospects of the Lakers next season after the addition of Steve Nash. He told Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com:
“I think we still need two to three pieces but if they can add a shooter, as I’ve told [general manager] Mitch [Kupchak], we’ve got a shot. One thing Oklahoma City still relies on talent. With Steve Nash, what happened to us in
the fourth quarter [in two games during the Lakers second-round playoff series] would not happen to us. Especially that second game and we had a seven-point lead in the last two minutes and we turned it over three times. We didn’t get good shots.”
The Lakers are looking good for next season ever since Steve Nash decided to be traded to them over other teams. With his addition, the Lakers have an experienced ball handler and play maker, one of the best ever to take the court
in the NBA. He will help Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol get easy shots instead of having to find their own shots.
His ball distribution abilities will also help the Lakers close games well, something they did not do well in the Western Conference Semi Finals last season against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
There have been rumours of a possible trade involving Dwight Howard and the Lakers, though no such deal has come forward yet. The Orlando Magic seem to be heading into next season with Howard still on the roster. But what the Lakers
truly need is some good role players to help strengthen the bench, rather than another superstar who will want himself to be at the centre of all the plays.
