Magic Trick - How they do it?

Question

How on earth do magicians do the trick where someone stands in a box which is separated into 3 compartments and the middle one moves all the way to the side, so it is as if their middle body has moved completely?

You know it's there because the hand is sticking out.

I sat in the third row and watched somebody do that once, about ten feet away, and I still couldn't figure it out!
