  1. When it comes to calling overseas, there are currently many better options than MagicJack.

    Here is why:

With MagicJack, if you want to call overseas... you cannot..... unless the person you are calling also has MagicJack on their PC running too.  Which means they have to buy one first, or you have to buy one and ship it to them.  Not always the most elegant solution...

However, MagicJack is promising to offer overseas calling soon beginning in February.... but we have no idea what the rates are yet...

MagicJack to MagicJack calls is the same thing as "In-Network Calling".  Which means, anyone who has an account with them can call each other for free....

Well, guess what.... just about every VoIP service in the world can do the same thing..... without having to buy anything, which MagicJack requires.

    Here are examples:

If you want to talk PC-PC for FREE, use any of the following:

    (most anywhere in the world)

    Google Talk

    Skype

    Yahoo Messenger

    MediaRing Talk

    Windows Live Messenger

    VBuzzer

    Raketu

    Gizmo Project

    Efonica

    TPad

    CallCentric

    InPhonex

    etc...

All the above VoIP services offer FREE In-Network calling between account holders.

All of the above VoIP services also provide PC-Phone long distance calling with very low international rates.

So, even though MagicJack may be the best thing to hit the USA since sliced bread..... there are many other services that are as good or better when it comes to international calling....

Here are some example "standard" rates to call Hong Kong:

    (using PC-Phone calling)  cents/min in  $US

    VBuzzer - 1.7 c

    Yahoo Voice  - 1.9 c

    Raketu - 1.9 c

    Hotfoon - 2.0 c

    Skype - 2.1 c

    Gizmo Project - 2.1 c

    Efonica - 2.1 c

    TPad - 2.4 c

    CallCentric  - 2.75 c

    InPhonex  - 2.6 c

    Packet8 - 3.0 c

    PcCall  - 3.9 c

    Vonage  - 4.0 c

So, as can be seen, for International calling using your PC and VoIP to call landlines abroad, there are many options with good rates.

Bottom line.... anything is cheaper than the Ma Bells....

I am not biased towards any one service.  I have used most of the above services at one time or another, and I use others not listed here as well

When it comes to VoIP, I firmly believe in having at least 3 VoIP services available at any one time.  Different services have different rates for different areas.... so, I pick which one best suits my needs at the time......

  2. no, not directly, but you can get one for your family and then the phone call is free!

I have bought several for my family abroad so they can call the US for free!!

I have used it all over Europe to call back to the USA....!
