  1. Magicjack ! Oh yes, I've had mine now for over four months....I paid 39.95 plus 6.95 shipping and handling. This includes the first year of service; and you can purchase additional years service for 19.95 per year. Magicjack offers up to five years advance purchase.

The unit requires high-speed internet connection, and operates separately so you can work on your computer- and talk at the same time if you wish. If there is anything negative, it's that you cannot put your computer in stand-by mode while the unit is connected. I usually

leave the unit disconnected unless I need the phone, then it only takes a moment to connect it and "pull up" the program.

Most recently, they have added international calling, and offer listings for pricing (to wherever you may be calling).

I even talked my sister into getting one, as she runs her own hair salon and often orders supplies from out of state.

Another positive is you can send one to a friend overseas; they can then call anywhere in the US or Canada for free, and communication between units is of course always free.

  2. magic jack is a nice TOY. It should NEVER be used to replace your landline phone.

Magic Jack REQUIRES an internet connection, if you are using xDSL, you NEED a working telephone connection, if you are using cable modem, you do not need a phone line.

The telco is battery powered, when the telco loses AC from the grid, you still have telephone service, when the MJ computer loses power, you are dead in the water.

If a lack of telephone service does not concern you, then go with the MJ, it is a cheap VoIP system. Even with it's issues, it is worth the $20/yr as a cheap long distance service, but not worth replacing a home phone.

  3. Magic Jack is a bit flaky with a DSL connection. Works better with high speed broadband connection. I find the service sometimes fair to good, other time, poor.!! I would NEVER replace a landline with Magic Jack. Incoming calls ..forget it....Lucky if they even get voicemail.! Good for a 'toy', but not a serious replacement for a landline, or even a good VOIP.!!

  4. To use Magic Jack you have to have a high speed internet connection, such as DSL. You buy the Magic Jack, plug it into a USB port & then plug a phone or head set into the jack. I works pretty well. There is not cost per call, since it is running thru the computer. I have Windows Vista on a DSL line & have good luck with line quality about 70% of the time. Some times I get echos & static but it's a lot cheaper & you can take it with you when you travel. The quantity of you DSL is key. If you can order DSL without a land line phone is the serve plan you do not have to have phone service to use Magic Jack. Check out their web site at www.MagicJack.com

  5. You don't need a landline to run the MJ.  Most DSL companies now offer "dry" DSL where phone service is not necessary to have DSL internet.  Since you do need a broadband connection, dry DSL or cable would be your best bet since dial-up and satellite don't work.  I did replace my landline with the MJ, but I also have a cell phone as backup.

  6. You will need your internet access from some method - cable, phone, etc.

But you won't need separate phone service.

Check the link below for review of majic jack.

  7. Yup.  Magic Jack is more for people with high speed connections (cable, DSL, etc.)  If you're using dial-up I'm not even sure it'd work.
