The network connections are in the basement, my wifes new desktop, the wall phone jack, a Netgear wireless router and the cordless phone base that has 4 phones. My Wi-Fi lap top is upstairs where I hang out.

I am confused on how I can try the magic jack without disconnecting the the base etc. I want to make calls upstairs. there is a phone jack up here, but I misplaced the filter for DSL. Plus the cordless has no wire. I going nuts. should I buy a cheap corded phone for up here? for when I want to call long distance? I think you need a monitor to see caller ID etc. am I wrong? I'm dying to try it but want to do it right. Can I plug the wired cheap phone in my wireless lap top??

Please help, I know this sounds crazy.

  1. Magic Jack plugs into a USB port on one of your computers. It will work better with a good high speed connection. Can be a bit flaky with slower sources, like DSL. You get what you pay for. I would NOT buy one. Heard too many horror stories

  2. Majgc Jack is no magic at all, but a complete scam.

They will charge you and spam  your computer with ads (like JUNO free internet) to pay for the rest. Good luck

Its cheaper to just skype people...

  3. If you have a cordless system with a base and 3 satellite units, just plug the base unit into the MJ which I assume is located on your upstairs desktop and then you can use any of the satellite units.  You don't need to worry about a filter since it is a VoIP device and not a regular phone line.  BTW they will charge you if you order anything but 1 MJ, standard shipping only.  If you order rush shipping (which is a joke) or more than 1 unit they charge immediately.  Of course they don't tell you this...
