Question:

[Magic the Gathering Cards #3] Untap step of land due to the use of Instant in opponents turn?

This is a weird question. I played with my friend yesterday, when my friend uses a spell during his "turn", I countered it with a "counter spell" like 'dash hopes' which will tap my 2 land (swamp). (blah blah) After that, it is already my turn. During my "Untap Step", my friend said that I can't or cannot untap my 2 land because I activated/use an Instant during his "turn", next he said that I can only untap my 2 land during his turn.

Is he correct about untapping (untap) my 2 land during his "turn".

I hope you/someone can help me in my third question. Thanks again.

  1. Confirming the previous answer. Your friend is dead wrong.

Here's the specific rule about it:

(302.1 is about Phasing... ignore it unless a card has phasing)

302.2. Next the active player determines which permanents he or she controls will untap. Then he or she untaps them all simultaneously (this game action doesn’t use the stack). Normally, all of a player’s permanents untap, but effects can keep one or more of a player’s permanents from untapping.

302.3. No player receives priority during the untap step, so no spells or abilities can be played or resolved. Any ability that triggers during this step will be held until the next time a player would receive priority, which is usually during the upkeep step

  2. He is wrong.  If you use land during your opponent's turn, you still get to untap it during your turn.  The phases go like this: Untap, upkeep, draw... and you must untap everything unless a card says otherwise.
