  1. The first x is the number of mana you tap, the second x is choice of type of mana.

  2. you have to pay 2x.  so like for meteor shower, you say "X is 3" (and meteor shower therefore does 4 damage) but the cost is "XXR" which means 3+3+R, or 6R.

  3. The “X” in the mana cost of a card is any user-defined variable. It can be zero, it can be a googleplex, and it can be any number in between. However, whatever number you choose, you will have to pay the cost twice, because there are two X’s in the mana cost. (In Magic, costs must be paid. Otherwise, it’s shoplifting, and all qualified judges prosecute shoplifters.)

    Hope that Helped!

  4. X is the number of lands you tap for colorless mana.

If the card reads do "X" damage and the cost of the spell is XR you can tap 1 red (R) and however many other lands will tell you the value of X damage you will do.  If there are 2 X's then you just have to tap 2 mana for 1 incriment of X.  So if the card says do "X" damage and the cost of the spell is XX then you need to tap 2 lands of any color to do 1 damage.

  5. That means that you have to pay twice the mana cost.

For example, on Whetwheel, if you want to play whethweel's ability and mill your opponent for 5, you will have to pay 10 (5 plus 5, since X=5) and tap whetwheel.

Since the ability is X, X, [tap], both instances of X have to be the same.
