Magic the Gathering damage question?

Question

if a card would deal say 5 damage to a creature and the creatures toughness is only 3 does it take 3 damage or 5 damage?

The creature DEALS 5 damage.

The other creature TAKES 3 damage.

If the 5 creature deals damage and has lifelink, you gain 5 life.

I'm very sure I'm right. Dealing and taking damages are two different things

The card would only take 3 damage since it only has 3 toughness. The card would be dead and the rest of the damage would be omited.

Even though the creature can only take 3 damage, it is dealt 5.  This is important because of instants and lifegain.  If you would gain life equal to the amount dealt, you would gain 5 life, not 3.  And, if the other 2 damage "fizzled" away, you could, in theory, pump up the creature after the other 2 damage fizzles and save the creature.

And yes, if you would deal damage to that creature's controller equal to the damage dealt, you would deal 5 damage to that creature's controller.

If a card says deals 5 damage to a creature, unless it is prevented, that creature will take that 5 to the face.  This also applies to lifelink and such.  And for the second, yes you would take the five damage as well, unless you're being "trampled"... even then if the mechanism of recieving damage because your creature said so and you were tampled an additional 2 the damage would still be five.

It depends.

If it's a card that specifies it only deals damage equal to its toughness, then it deals 3;

Otherwise, it deals all 5.

the card would deal 5 damage (so if it has lifelink or some other damage based ability it counts as 5)

the other card would take 3 damage and die.

there are of course exceptions. Souls of the Faultless says "you gain life equal to the damage dealt to souls of the faultless". even though it only has 3 toughness, it is still dealt 5 damage (but it only takes 3)
