Okay lets say you have a 3/3 creature attacking a player who block with a 1/1 creature. Ok i understand that by blocking with the 1/1 creature he takes all of the damage even though there would be 2 left over after killing him. So here is my question...Lets say i have multiple creatures all attacking my opponent player but he only has one creature to block with. Does the other player's creature block all of the damage from all of my creatures or does he just block one of my creatures until destroyed and then the rest of my creatures damage goes to the opposing player?

  1. He can only block one creature, unless the creature he is blocking with has the ability to block more than one creature, which is fairly rare.

  2. In the combat stage you assign which of your creatures attack your opponent, lets say you attack with five 3/3 creatures and your opponent has only one 1/1 creature. After you assign which creatures you are going to attack with then he assigns which creatures he has in play to block which is only one 1/1 creature. That one creature can only be assigned to block one of your creatures.  The rest of your creatures are unblocked there fore giving damage to your opponent.

  3. Lemme break it down for you.

    Declare Attacker Phase:

This phase is right after your main phase.  Here you decide who you want to attack with.  Both players may play any spells or abilities.

    Declare Blocker Phase:

Your opponent chooses whom they block with.  Both players may play any spells or abilities.  Each creature can block up to 1 creature. (unless the card has an ability that says otherwise).  The player blocking can choose to block the same attacker with more than one blocking creature.

    Spells and Abilities:

First the attacker plays any spells or abilities he wants.

Then the blocker plays any spells or abilities he wants.

    Combat Damage:

All the damage is dealt between the creatures.  Any creatures that were not blocked deal their damage directly to the blocking player.  If an attacking creature was blocked by more than 1 creature, attacking player divides the damage of the blocked creature as he chooses amongst the creatures blocking it.  Both players may play any spells or abilities.

Example: I attack with a 6/6, and he blocks the 6/6 with a 2/3, 3/1, and 2/1.  I divide the damage how I want.  I'll do 3 damage to the 2/3, 1 to the 3/1, and 2 to the 2/1.  My creature takes 7 damage and I split my 6 amongst the blockers.

So now you are asking what happens when you attack with multiple creatures and your opponent only has 1 creature.  His creature can only block 1 of your attacking creatures.  The other ones deal their damage directly to him.  Now some cards have abilities where they can block an additional creature.  Those cards are straight forward.  They can block 2 (or more) creatures, instead of 1.  In that scenario, the creature blocks 2 (or more) other creatures, and takes all the damage from both.  You divide the damage of your blocker among the 2 however you please.

Example:  I have an Anurid Swarmsnapper (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDeta... and my opponent attacks with a 2/2 and a 4/1.  I use my Swarmsnapper's ability during my blocking step and block both of them.  I split the damage during the combat damage phase, 1 on the 4/1 and 0 on the 2/2.

Just note that if a creature has trample, any excess damage will be dealt to your opponent, ONLY when you attack.  If a creature with trample blocks, it doesn't deal damage over.  So in your 3/3 and 1/1 example, the 3/3 attacks, killing the 1/1, and doing 2 damage to your opponent.

I know I rambled on about Phases but it is important to know the exact phases so that you can use them to your advantage and play properly.

Good job by the way posting this in GLBT section before ;)

  4. Unless otherwise stated on the defending creature, it would only be able to block one attacking creature.  The rest of the creatures that are attacking this turn would be unblocked and damage would be dealt to the defending player's life total.

  5. he blocks one until he's destroyed, then rest of creatures dmg opposing player
