the kids at the tournaments run around bragging about what kind of deck they're using, and they talk about the deck me and others used against them. would it be within the rules to "side-up" against a given deck before even the first game?

also; the tournaments are about to become "sanctioned", which is to say, no more type 1.5. what expansions are allowed in type 2, and what do their symbols look like? thank you in advance...

  1. To answer your first question: No. It is not legal to sideboard before game 1 of a match. You can only sideboard before games 2 and 3. If your deck is not in it's original configuration at the start of game 1, you will be given a game loss for failure to desideboard if the judge feels it was an accident. If he thinks you did it intentionally, then you are disqualified from the tournament for cheating.

To answer your second question: Type two currently consists of Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight, Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Coldsnap and 10th edition... as well as all previous versions of the cards printed in those sets.

By the way, you can sanction 1.5 tournaments. The format is now called Legacy, and Wizards has given good support to the format recently (3 Grand Prix's, and it was a portion of Worlds last year).

  2. Dude. Great to hear people are still playing. I don't know about the 1.5 vs 2.0 rules/symbols, but I'd think any of the judges at a tourney could answer your question about siding up.

  3. Wow. I didn't know that game was still around! I use to play in 1997 with an awesome Blue and White deck!!!! It is now banned from tournaments because all the cards are too powerful for now-a-days cards.. Wow.. I miss that game.. Sorry I don't know anything about it after 1998!! I hope someone can answer for you.

  4. The cards currently used in Type 2/Standard format are Tenth Edition (Big X for the symbol), Time Spiral (Hourglass), Planar Chaos (Interlinking chains?), Future Sight (Tribal-inspired eye shape), Lorwyn (Helmet[?] facing to the lower left),  Morningtide (Rising sun symbol but it looks more like a fireball to me), Shadowmoor (Looks like a bat of some kind in flight facing to the right), and Eventide (Turn the Morningtide symbol upside down).

And yes, having cards on the side is a sanctioned maneuver.  I believe there is a limit of 15 cards for a side deck but I'm not quite sure.  I never really practiced using side decks because my deck is what it is.

  5. if your asking would it be legal to build a side deck to counter a opponets deck yes.

thats exactly how you stratagize what cards or combos you need to beat them.

as for the second part i have no clue.

ive never played in a tourny so ive never had to study symbols.

  6. 1.  You cannot sideboard before Game 1.  You have to use the deck in it's originality at the start of the match.  If you get caught, you will get at least a match loss, if not DQ'd.

    2.  Type 2 is Coldsnap (Stalagtite), Timespiral (Hourglass), Planar Chaos (2 "rings"), Future Sight (kinda looks like a cat's eye), Lorwyn (kinda looks like a flame), Morningtide (a ball with flames), Shadowmoor (wing), Xth edition ("X").  Eventide ("crescent moon" with flames going down) rotates in soon if not already legal.
