  1. White is usually fast small creatures with pretty big fliers to finish the job.  There is a lot of damage prevention to slow the beating.  Had a white cleric deck once.  I really couldn't be touched but it was pretty hard to win.  The game lasted like 2 hours.

Green is fast in that you get mana producing elves out first and that makes your bigger creatures come into play faster.  It is usually a beatdown deck.

Red is fast and likes to burn to win.  Goblins are normally fast and you can back them up with direct damage spells for the win.

Black is pretty hard to play as a beginner.  Black punishes itself in order to get a bigger advantage.  If you are playing black, be prepared to take some personal damage to get that win.  Remember with black, the only life that matters is the last one.  Most beginners don't like black because of that fact.

Blue is probably the hardest to play.  Blue is all about control.  Countering spells and drawing more cards than your opponent to get the win.  Can't find a way to stop that huge creature?  Don't let him in play to begin with.  Also, blue's speed comes in the fashion of Flash.  Play your creatures on your opponent's turn so that they are ready to fight for you on your turn.  The reason why blue is the hardest to play (as a beginner) is you need to figure out what to let through into play and what to counter.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

  2. First off, a deck can be any combination of colors. There are so many strategies for each color that it's impossible to list them all.

I suggest looking at magicthegathering.com and finding the Magic Academy articles. I'm not sure if that's the right title, but they can be found in the article archives. They teach the basics of Magic, including the mana curve, threat assessment, and overall strategy. I learned a lot that way, but I also learned by playing the game and getting my butt whooped.

Good luck on your Magic journey!
