Magnesium and leg cramps..?

I have had leg cramps my entire life (especially bad knees). I just spotted a magnesium supplement in my house and on the back it read symptoms of magnesium deficiency: leg cramps, migraines, fatigue." I have felt and complained of both fatigue and leg cramps for as long as i can remember.

what will happen if i start taking this supplement but i don't really need it????

  1. shoegal gave you a good answer!

its not a good idea to mix in Mg if you have a calcium issue. BUT

I think you have excess calcium, not a lack of it. so magnesium for you WILL HELP

try it and see. nothing bad will happen im sure

  2. Leg cramps can be caused by a lot of different things, so check with your doctor on the cause.  Nutritionally, calcium imbalance can also cause muscle cramping.

How much is the supplement?  200mg of magnesium or less would be safe for most people to take as an "insurance supplement", but check with your doctor or nutritionist if you have any health conditions.  Toxicity is rare, but can happen especially in people with a low calcium intake, and too much magnesium can cause diarrhea.  You could also try eating more foods high in magnesium if you want a more natural route: dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and avocado are all good sources.

    Good luck!

  3. "what will happen if i start taking this supplement but i don't really need it????"

You will have expensive urine! Excess magnesium is excreted in the urine.
