Magnificent Jim Furyk takes the lead at East Lake
Jim Furyk is the only player in the USA Ryder Cup who has not secured a victory this season. His stunning display in the second round at the PGA Tour Championship might land in his first tour victory, that too, at the right time.
The veteran was in the mood on Friday, as he blazed through the field. In the first ten holes, the American shot seven birdies.
It looked like the tournament might end right here but a few slip ups on the back nine kept the competition wide open.
After his first round 69 on Thursday, Furyk practiced hitting his driver and it did pay off for him in the second round, as he shot nine birdies on Friday.
Furyk, however, would have been disappointed by the fact that he missed a simple putt on the eighteenth and had to settle for a bogey on the par 3 hole.
Furyk needed a round like this to silence his critics. This performance also shows that Davis Love III was right in choosing a former US Open winner instead of Hunter Mahan.
"I just didn't hit enough fairways yesterday," Furyk said. "I felt like my iron play was sharp, but I was playing from the rough too much and scrambling a couple times too many".
He continued, "So I wanted to get the ball in play. I did a good job of that, and I set myself up for a lot better iron shots, and my iron game was as good as it's been all year on the front nine. ... So you've got to feel good about it".
Many thought Jim Furyk was a finished product and that he is too old to compete with the young guns of today. Jim, however, has silenced everybody with a perfect and in a professional way.
Tiger Woods, too, has come out in favour of Jim Furyk and said that he has been of great service over the years. He expressed that Furyk is still fit and strong enough to be part of the USA Ryder Cup team.
The competition at East Lake is still wide open. It is for Jim Furyk to remain consistent in order to bag his first title of the year.
