Magnificent McDowell leads World Challenge by three shots
It was not the best for golf as far as the weather was concerned but Graeme McDowell was on song at the Sherwood Golf and Country Club. The Englishman carded 6-under, 66 in round two to lead the World Challenge by three strokes.
There was slight rain on Friday as the players took to the course. However, it did not bother McDowell as he carded seven birdies. His lone disappointment of the day came when he bogeyed the par-4 7th hole.
The world number 24 started brilliantly on Friday by shooting three straight birdies on the first three holes.
A bogey on the 7th hole meant that he ended up being two-under on the front nine. However, he regained his composure and shot four birdies on the back nine to finish off with 66.
McDowell leads the tournament by three shots. Following him is Bo Van Pelt. Bo had a decent round as well. He shot four-under, 68 in the second round. The American is six-under for the tournament and is three shots behind McDowell.
"A little lucky break kind of getting a late invite in here, and kind of provided an interesting catalyst for things to come in 2010, and you know, sometimes the stars align, and this was certainly part of those stars aligning for me in 2009," McDowell said.
The Englishman’s best finish at the tournament was in 2009 where he finished second.
"I guess the great thing about this golf course for me is I feel like if you can play it aggressively off the tee and hit it in the fairway, you can pretty much feel like you can birdie every hole”.
“You know, it's always pretty receptive, and the greens are very pure, and it's not a particularly long golf course,” he expressed.
Tiger Woods played slightly better today. He struck the ball very well. The former world number one carded three-under, 69 on Friday.
Woods, a five-time champion of the tournament, is currently tied for the 6th spot but he will certainly raise the bar over the weekend.
The overnight leader, Nick Watney, had a poor outing, as he carded one-over, 73 for the round.
