Magnificent Seven preview: Enzo Maccarinelli
Enzo Maccarinelli staged a comeback so good even Lazarus was impressed. The Welshman’s career appeared over after suffering three defeats in four fights.
Granted one of them was against David Haye, but the other two were must wins against Ola Afolabi and Denis Lebedev.
In fact Maccarinelli can look at Haye with a jealous eye, when they faced each other two years ago they were seen as two promising fighters on par. It was a short lived spectacle though, they flew in and after a decent first round Maccarinelli got caught badly in the corner by "The Hayemaker" and was soon staggering around the ring with the grace of a drunken hippopotamus doing ballet. As a result Haye went on to the heavyweights and superstardom, while Maccarinelli has sunk.
With two defeats in the next three it looked like it might be the end for “Big Mac”. Yet after the Lebdev fight he got up dusted himself down gave it on more crack and has since scored three successive first round KO’s picking up the European Cruiserweight title along the way.
Maccarinelli's style is one where he sits behind his jab and builds from there, his key weapon is a big knockout shot which has racked him up 25 KOs in his 32 wins. His movement is a bit Frankenstein-like at times and his jaw is certainly questionable. Yet the biggest problem with Mac has been his lack of confidence since the Haye fight. Maccarinelli spent a lot of the Lebdev fight with his gloves up almost as if he was waiting for the knockout.
The Welshman has his work cut out on Saturday when he takes on undefeated Alexander Frenkel. If he can get a win then he will be back in contention for a world title and looking towards the big guns of the division.
However, it all depends which Maccarinelli turns up, but with three first round KO’s out of three it looks like the old power puncher may be back in business.
