Magnificent Seven preview: Kell Brook
If you were to rank famous Kell Brooks in England this one would come in second behind the lovely former Big Breakfast presenter Kelly Brook. However, all that could be about to change as the boxing Brook steps up his career and launches himself on the international scene.
Make no mistake “Kid” is a fiercely talented pugilist. Fighting with an unblemished 21 fight record with 14 KO’s, every time the Sheffield fighter is in action he seems more and more impressive.
In terms of where he is right now Brook is as well rounded as a young prospect can get. He has a nice bounce about him and boasts a lightning jab which is devastatingly accurate; he also possesses decent power and is a very good puncher who can throw an array of shots. There’s a genuine charisma to his style and he picks his shots very well; Brook is more than happy to fight off the back foot and counter-punch as much as he likes coming forward and has a very clean style.
The 2009 boxing writers Young Boxer of the Year has so far impressed against the likes of Kevin McIntyre ,who he KO’d in emphatic fashion the in the first round, and decent domestic fighter Michael Lomax who made it to three.
Right now Brook is starting to step up on to the world stage and went the distance to secure the minor WBO inter-continental belt off of Kzrzystof Bienias in March. Somewhat ominously though this also secures him a shot at WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. He might be wise to swerve that one.
One question mark that hangs over Brook is attitude. Earlier this year he was found guilty of assaulting a night club bouncer and if he wants to reach the elite level he needs to avoid incidences such as this and concentrate on his career because he has the potential to become a world champion.
He fights Michael Jennings this weekend, finally. This fight has been in the making for about a year, having collapsed a couple of times. This is a massive step up for Brook, Jennings is a very good fighter and will certainly represent the sternest challenge Kid has faced yet.
Let’s just hope Frank Warren made sure he booked the right Brook, or it could be a horrifying spectacle.
