Magnus A Carlsson eyes number one spot in the European Challenge Tour Rankings
After a strong finish last week, at the M2M Russian Challenge Cup, Magnus A Carlsson sliced the margin against the European Challenge Tour Rankings leader, Gary Lockerbie, to just €390.
The Swede now plans to clinch the top spot by outshining his contender at the Kazakhstan Open, at the Zhailjau Golf Resort this week.
Right from the start of the 2012 golf season, Carlsson has performed well on both the European Tour and the Challenge Tour. In all the appearances that he made during the year, he has not missed a single cut.
However, he decided to spend the rest of the season on the Challenge Tour and relishes the opportunity to play in Kazakhstan.
“It wasn’t a very difficult decision (to play the Challenge Tour for the second half of the season) because I wouldn’t have had many starts on The European Tour so if I wanted to play golf I needed to play Challenge Tour and now it looks like it is paying
off,” he said.
Kazakhstan Open is the same tournament that saw him take the share of the fifth spot in 2010, which played an important role in earning his European Tour card for the 2011 season.
This year, he does not need to worry about his card for the bigger stage. However, he does care about being the best on the Challenge Tour.
He needs to work really hard in order to overhaul the current number one, who has enjoyed the best of his form this year.
“Of course it would be nice to be Number One but if I don’t keep playing well I won’t get there and if I play how I did in Russia on the Saturday I won’t be Number One by the end of the season,” said the 32-year-old. “I just have to work out what happened
and see what I can do better”.
While talking about the Zhailjau Golf Resort in Almaty, he stated that the rough was thick and the greens were set up nicely.
Therefore, he expects to play some good shots on the course and take the biggest winning cheque of the season. The tournament offers €400,000 as prize money– the biggest on the tour.
