Former Sri Lankan captain and current middle-order batsman, Mahela Jayawardene, is of the opinion that the new rules of the International Cricket Council mandating two new balls at both ends and the restriction of power-play overs has evened out the balance
between bat and ball.
Two new balls mean that the bowlers are going to get more swing for a longer period of time. The fast bowlers around the world have loved this decision, which is also going to test the technique of the top order batsmen more.
A number of former cricketers believed earlier that the modern day game is way too much in favour of batsmen with the restrictions on the bouncers, quality of pitches, fast outfields and high quality bats.
However, the new rules have been welcomed all around the world and the cricket pundits feel that now the 50-over format is going to be more interesting.
In his article for ESPNCricinfo thw former Sri Lankan captain backed the new rules but stated that the teams are going to take some time to cope with the changes.
Mahela said, “The Powerplays and having a different ball at either end contribute towards making it an even game between bat and ball. It's a good challenge but teams will take some time to adjust to the new rules.”

to adjust with the new rules.
Mahela added that run-scoring will come down in ODI cricket now but the matches are going to be more interesting and the teams must devise better strategies for the power-play overs.
“I think you'll see scores coming down with the new Powerplay rules. Under the previous rule, teams kept wickets in hand and accelerated in the last five overs, in which they could get about 60 or more runs. Now teams get a maximum of 30-40 runs”, he added.
