Mahela Jayawardene expressed his gratitude at the end of anti-cancer walk for public’s generous donations – Cricket News Update
The batting star of Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene, commended the generosity of his fellow citizens for their open heartedness toward the cause of cancer and making huge donations during the anti-cancer walk.
Jayawardene was a part of the 416 mile long trek, starting from southern Sri Lanka and culminating at the northern end. This 27-day journey was organized by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 Cancer Society with Stafford Industries being the key sponsors.
The trek was a huge success in terms of participation and proceeds. Approximately 25,000 people participated in the walk including some cricket celebrities.
The cricketers who were part of this noble cause were http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CRD-Fernando-c1292.
Jayawardene is permanently associated with the Cancer society because his brother, Dishal had died because of the brain tumour. The victimized player said, “I will be involved in cancer projects till I die".
The 34-year-old batsman talked to BBC in Jaffna, where he laid the foundation of a cancer ward. This http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ward-c96201 will be dedicated to children suffering from cancer and will be located in Jaffna’s main hospital. Proceeds from the 27-day anti-cancer walk will be
utilized for this construction.
Mahela Jayawardene walked for two days with the participants and shared his experiences with the media. The former captain was impressed with people’s response and especially with the involvement of children.
Mahela said that a six-year-old boy in Kurunegala gave him all the coins he had been saving which made his day. He also appreciated the people of South who opened their hearts for the construction of hospital in North.
Poor Tamil people who had been badly affected with the civil war against the “Tamil Tigers” also contributed for the cause. The fund-raisers respected their gesture and accepted the donations but felt guilty as those people had almost no means of income.
Most of the participants had an emotional attachment to the cause as they had lost their loved ones because of this deadly disease. The walk generated $1.25 Million but the cancer society aims for more.
