http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) new One Day International rule on field restrictions favours the batsmen and not the bowlers.
According to the new ODI rules, the number of powerplay overs has been reduced from 20 to 15. There will be only two powerplays in a match, instead of three. In the first powerplay, in the first ten overs, only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard
circle. The second five-over batting powerplay will have to be taken before the 40th over, and only three fielders will be allowed outside the inner circle.
Previously, the captain was allowed to field five players outside the 30-yard circle during the non-powerplay overs, but the new rule has limited the number of outfielders to four. Moreover, the new rule also allows the bowlers to bowl two bouncers in an
over.
"The rule which makes mandatory for five fielders inside the circle has brought in added pressure on bowlers," said Mahela Jayawardene while speaking to media reporters ahead of his side’s third One Day International against on tour http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754.
"It is difficult for the bowlers to do well. They come under added pressure as boundaries would be easy to come by with just four fielders permitted outside in the non-power play overs," the Sri Lankan skipper added further.
The revised rules came into effect for the first time on Sunday, November 4, 2012, during the second One day International of the ongoing series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
Despite being a batsman, the Sri Lankan skipper believes the move is not in the best interest of the sport and that the rule is especially a threat to the role of spinners.
"I am not comfortable with these changes. It's not the way to go forward," said the 35-year-old Colombo batsman, a day after playing the first ODI under the new rule. "I have this funny feeling that spinners will not have a role to play in the future," added
the Islander.
Jayawardene further said that the revised rules will assist run scoring and believes the teams will now start posting big scores regularly.
