Devastated after their third consecutive Test loss (2nd against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746), Sri Lankan skipper, Mahela Jayawardene, urged his side to step up and show character in the final 5-day match, to be played at Sydney on January 3, 2013.
After losing the first Test against Australia by 137-runs, the touring Sri Lankans were bulldozed by the Kangaroos in Melbourne by an innings and 201 runs. Having won the toss, the Lankan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 elected to bat first but were completely bamboozled by the Australian
bowling attack.
In reply, Australia dominated the visitors by clinching a lead of 304 runs in first innings, which proved too big a challenge for Sri Lanka. Put to bat for their second innings on the third day, Lankan batting collapsed again to give Australia their first
Test series win at home this summer.
Three Sri Lankan batsmen were unable to take the field in the second innings following injuries. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/UWMBCA-Welegedara-c2735 were absent hurt.
Eager to perform well in his final tour as a Test Captain, Jayawardene, revealed signs of disappointment with the Sri Lankan batters. He felt they played loose and were not focused enough against a formidable Australian outfit.
“Today I thought we needed to buckle down and bat well. We lost two wickets in no time in the first over which gave them a lot of momentum and then we just kept losing wickets. You can't pinpoint one thing and say that's where we went wrong. There were loose
shots and a loss of concentration. At the same time, the Australians played some really good cricket as well. You can't take that away from them. We need to step up to the plate, we need to show character and really dig deep,” shared the Lankan skipper.
Currently Sri Lanka is trailing the 3-Test series 2-0. Losing the tournament following a defeat in Melbourne, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 will look to avoid a complete whitewash by bouncing back in the next encounter, scheduled for the coming week, ahead of 5 ODIs and 2 T20Is.
