Mahela would outscore Sanga.

I think Mahela is a better batsman than Sanga and it has nothing to do with stats or consistency.

If you ask most cricketers who is better, Mark Waugh or Steve Waugh, most would pick Mark Waugh even though his average is like 15 less than that of his brother.

Mahela's batting looks natural and not forced while Sanga believes in practice makes perfect.I'd pick Mahela as the better batsman(slightly better).

Sanga is an unusually great batsman. Such a batsman is not playing now in test match cricket. Only Lara was better than him in the recent times.

Mahela has grown enormously. In the last one year, Mahela played 7 matches, scored 848 runs in 11 innings. IMO, he is the best in the world as per the current form. He pushed Sanga to No.2 position in SRL team. Sanga played 6 matches in the same time and scored 635 runs in 10 innings.

The only Indian batsman who can come nearer these performances is Sehwag who played 5 matches in the same time and scored 658 runs in 9 innings. Sourav (1,229 runs in 23 innings), Sachin (860 runs in 16 innings), Laxman (907 in 17), Irfan Pathan (270 in 5), Karthik (378 in 12) follow.

The speciality of Irfan Pathan is that he has good performances with bat and ball. Hope he will get the place in the team in place of Gambhir who is not much of a batsman in test matches (2 innings, 8 runs).

Kumar Sangakara has been in a great form lately, so I would go with Sangakara. I think he will get a big score in atleast 1 innings. Mahela too must not be underestimated, and since it's an unpredictable game, and he too has the potential of playing big knocks, nothing can be said with certainty though. But owing to his brilliant form of late, Sanga may just get the edge over Mahela.
